What Every Man Should Have in His Closet

Yves Saint Laurent once famously said, "Fashion fades; style is eternal." What he was getting at is that seasons come and seasons go, and with them plenty of desirable items, but certain things—a trench coat, a perfectly cut navy suit—aren't subject to the ever-changing tides of cyclical trends. They're essentials for every man, and for good reason—it's the reason that images of Steve McQueen or Paul Newman look as relevant today as they did a few decades ago.

Here, I've round-up those things that every man should have in his closet.

Khaki Pants

You can buy khaki pants at every price point. Fit is important because you don’t want to look like a remnant of the dotcom era.

Sneakers

Designer sneakers have been all the rage for several seasons but none of them combine style and street cred like Superga. You can pick up a classic off-white pair for your closet.

Solid Color Jeans

Expensive designer jeans have oversaturated the market and most of them are burdened with all sorts of unappealing details. Buy a pair in solid dark blue that is free of unnecessary accoutrements.

Cashmere Sweater

It’s worth it to spend some good cash on a fine cashmere sweater, especially one in neutral, because you will have endless use for it.

Blue Blazer

A blue blazer is the backbone of a man’s closet. It can be paired with almost anything and it lends itself to different styles whether you want to look preppy, modern or traditional.

White Button Up

A crisp white shirt seems like a no-brainer but it always gets passed over for more colourful designs. If you want to look like stylish Milanese men, start with a white shirt.

Slim Dress Shoes

It’s time to dump the squared toed shoes in the garbage because they are so yesterday. Earn style points by picking a slim pair with a rounded or pointed toe.
